“From hair dressing to hair weaving, from head-tie knots to wigs and hairpieces, all are present in the big shops. Sissie could not help but admire the artistry that goes into all this”
Derived from Ama Ata Aidoo’s “Our Sister Killjoy.
Finding ones style isn't just about clothing choices,it stretches even to the choice of hairstyles whether you go for cuts, braids, weaves, twists, and the many other choices available.
As the popular Yoruba proverb says, "Oko orin ko se ori" which means "a beautiful head is not complete without hair". This saying highlights the role of hair in completing a person's look.
Hair has always been and will continue to be an obsession of mine, I remember as a child, whenever I went to make my hair, I'll always stand by the side watching the hairdresser working her magic, I even have a picture album on my phone to monitor my hair growth. This matured and even extended to the choice of handwork I was to learn making me go for hairdressing contradicting my mom's choice of tailoring.
P.S: that's where I go dressed in Mary amaka core.
For years, I had endured the stinging burn of relaxers (the enemy) just to have relatively soft hair (relatively because it actually never tames my stubborn hair) and thankfully as I grew older I was able to transition back to my natural hair, enduring the much preferable pain of detangling and combing through tresses of hair.
And now as a young adult, I have finally found my community matching my time, my style, my aesthetic, I no longer have to sit for hours just to get braids on, although it still takes hours to relock my micro locs (extremely small sized locs ), anyways I am now officially loc'd in.
This decision did not come easy, I had to think deeply about it especially as a person with commitment issues, speaking of…
locs I started before and got rid of because the size wasn't to my liking.
I might not be of the certified locs girlies but as a new comer and a long time ally. When I say ally, I mean as a loctician ( if that's a word) who has successfully helped in the transition of two loc girlies, I am an official member of the community.
So the next time you see me, greet me " Oju gbooro o", I'll hit you back with an " Oya ayaa o". And y'all should patronize me because I am good at what I do.
I really wish I could attend or even host a locs convention or meeting with other loc girlies and just talk and relate with them, we'll get back to this later.
Oh and I make my own hair, just wanted to put this here, I have many talents.
Anyways bye.
Oh and please humorous people here, can you come up with loc puns, something like "hair I go, "hair me out, " hair comes the bride, but with locs.
Thank you.
You wove these words well and I enjoyed reading through.
I hated making my hair for the longest period but I could not get rid of it. I was always on twist or pineapple with thread. Finally, I am a bald baddie.
"hair comes the blide, but with locs." 😂😂
