Tere never understood the concept of finding one's self, she tried conforming to the idea but all she was faced with were the realities of her failed life from the constant therapy sessions that yielded no results, she was a hundred percent sure Dr. Akan only made it to the appointments for the fat paycheck she got every month.
To her non-existent and damaged love life, even after coming out to her African parents and breaking their hearts by being a lesbian, her countless girlfriends always ended the relationship urging her to come out of the closet and like Jade, her last girlfriend advised to "stop being the awkward lesbian". How many closets were there to break out of because she never really understood it.
She sometimes wonders if she created the idea of being a lesbian just to spice up her boring and sad life but her best friend, Eme, always reminded her that "sexuality was just a spectrum" which makes no sense by the way.
Seeking family comfort is always a fail, she lost that when she dropped the"lesbian bomb" on them. Her sister, Angel, now sprinkles holy water around the house whenever she came around to see her grandmother. Another reason she found about her pregnancy from her sister's work colleague's Facebook.
Work was ok as far as calculating finances could go, work relationship on the other hand was a failure, she never had the liberty to leave her pitiful cubicle not because she wasn't allowed to but because she'll rather nibble on plantain chips than walk around to receive their loud judgemental stares and most importantly because of Shannon from sales who apparently finds pleasure gossiping about her saggy appearance and three months old braids with the better African employee, Abena, the Ghanaian receptionist.
All this and many more were the opening conversations Tere had with the drunk half caste she met at the bar who claimedAgbani Darego was her long lost sister. Tere thought she was pretty and shiny like the Barbie doll her sister got her for her 25th birthday. She even had wild curls like the Indian girls on Eme's Pinterest board but the strong Igbo dialect she had contrasted her glossy aura.
But unlike the cheap Barbie doll her sister got her, she wanted to keep this one but firstly she had to get her to stop drinking which was proving quite impossible especially with the talk about some Emeka guy she kept cursing.
Who knows maybe this time she'll finally get something right.
